Next Steps: How Can I Connect with Refugees In the Hamilton Area?
- Become a "Global Friend" through Micah House and walk alongside a newly arrived refugee (contact Gillian at 905-296-4387 or info@micahhouse.ca)
- Invite a former refugee to share some of their experiences at your church or small group
- Volunteer at a Conversational English Circle (contact Susan Cheeseman at SISO 905-667-7496 or 905-667-SISO, ext 327.)
- Find out what CURE is doing to help refugee youth succeed (hint: talk to Leo Johnson who is here today or visit www.curecanada.org)
- Visit a New Immigrant Church and experience worshipping God in new ways
- Volunteer to cook a meal at Micah House see www.micahhouse.ca for details
- Find ways to make your church more welcoming to refugees see www.truecity.wordpress.com for some starting points
- Rent out a room in your home to a refugee needing a place to live
- Volunteer at a church that is already actively engaged with refugees and new immigrants
- Read articles about refugees and refugee issues in the newspaper. Be informed and be ready to advocate on the behalf of refugees in your community.
- Explore what it would mean for your church to sponsor a refugee to come to Canada - See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/sponsor/index.asp as a starting place
